Strategic Management (L9)

Grade Achieved: B

The good part of this module was the freedom to choose a company for the individual work and so was able to make the module interesting.  The module was looking at analysing the position of a company and then making recommendations on improving it.  I chose to analyse Edinburgh Zoo and I was really pleased with my research and my recommendations as a result.  It was one of the first times I enjoyed the research aspect of coursework and found a lot of self-motivation in doing so.

My research concluded that Edinburgh Zoo continue to lose money mainly due to the change in public perception regarding the purpose of zoos in modern society.   My recommendations involved utilising more technology in order to ensure they deliver on their mission for education and conservation and limiting the use of live animals as attractions or, as could be perceived by an increasingly critical public, as entertainment.

I found this module quite challenging as  I did not find the content particularly engaging and the teaching style frustrating.  As a mature student I did not enjoy being treated like I was in a primary school with no room for debate or feedback.  I was also angered with the grading not adhering to the university standard and lost motivation as a result.
