Digital Dinosaurs?

Digital dinosaur is the (reasonably mean but industry accepted) name given to people or businesses that avoid new technology and digital change, including the rise of social media.

I have worked with several businesses on a campaign and when I got to the social media part of the pitch I heard some of these…

‘We don’t really use social media…we don’t need it’

‘It’s all very well and good using social media but speaking directly to our customers is more important to us.’

‘I don’t do social media.’

Working with people/orgs like this I will often push this further and normally what is revealed is the fear of the unknown or fear of doing it ‘wrong’ and looking out of date or old.

Their fear is justified. Social media and digital trends move FAST and they are designed to make you feel like you are not doing enough because that’s how they get you to spend more time on it (more than you actually need) because you using their app is how they make their money.

My advice is to always pick the ones that work (does not need to be all of them – I promise), learn how to use those ones well and embrace speaking to your audience in another way. This is to add to, rather than replace, any of your current marketing activities (assuming they are all working).

Getting people interested enough in what you do to take an action is all marketing is at the end of the day.

With nearly 4 billion people using social media in the world I am sure there is way we can work together to make social media a relevant part of any marketing plan.
